Si President Rodrigo Duterte ang itinuturong nangungunang pinagmumulan ng “fake news” ni VERA Files founder and president Ellen Tordesillas.
Sinabi ito ng batikang journo sa pagdinig ng Senado kahapon tungkol sa “fake news.”
“Most of the sources of misinformation is being perpetrated by government officials on taxpayers’ money. And the number one source of fake news is President Duterte himself,” sabi ni Tordesillas.

Dito tinalakay ni Tordesillas ang fact-checking project ng VERA Files kung saan marami sa mga napupuna nilang mga maling impormasyon ng government officials ay galing sa Presidente.
“And I tell you, President Duterte keeps us busy. In just one speech sometimes, he would say more than one falsehood.”
“And the problem about that is that most of the inaccurate data that he has are basis of policies,” dagdag niya.
Inihalimbawa ni Tordesillas ang war on drugs ng Administrasyon na aniya ay nakabase sa data na hindi kayang ma-verify.
Kasunod nito, iminungkahi ng journo ang pagsusulong ng social media literacy bilang paraan para sugpuin ang “fake news.”
Bagay na ginagawa na raw ng VERA Files sa iba’t-ibang lugar at campus.
Sabi naman ni Senator Nancy Binay, baka pwedeng makipagtulungan ang VERA Files sa kahalintulad na programa ng Presidential Communications Operations Office.

“Mahirap kasi makipag-cooperate sa pamahalaan kasi hindi ko alam kung pareho kami ng definition ng truth,” giit ng mamamahayag.
Ayon kay Tordesillas, may isang fact-check project sila para sa mga estudyante na ginanap sa opisina ng Philippine Information Agency na hindi natuloy.
Habang inihahanda na raw kasi ng VERA Files ang kanilang presentation, napansin daw ng mga taga-PIA na marami sa mga inihalimbawa nilang maling impormasyon ay galing kay President Duterte.
“They asked us to tone down the presentation. Ano iyon? So hindi na kami nag-present,” paliwanag ni Tordesillas.

“I do respect Ma’am Ellen as a journalist. Pero ‘pag sinabi niyo pong si Presidente ang source ng falsehood, generalized masyado ang inyong sinasabi, ay hindi naman ako makapapayag na ganoon-ganoon na lang,” sabi ni Andanar sa pagdinig.
Hinimok ng kalihim si Tordesillas na sumadya sa kanyang opisina at magbigay ng mga ebidensiya at dokumento bilang patunay sa mga sinasabi niyang falsehoods ng Pangulo.
Ayon naman kay Tordesillas, nakadokumento lahat at nakalagay din sa kanilang website ang ginagawa nilang fact-checking sa Pangulo.
