(July 5, 2024) – A labor group on Friday claimed that Filipinos did not feel the slight drop in inflation last month due to the persisting economic issues in the country.
According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, inflation slightly eased to 3.7% in June from 3.9% in May. However, Partido Lakas ng Masa (PLM) dismissed its impact.
“Sinasabi ng datos ng gobyerno na bahagya raw na humina ang inflation rate o pagtaas sa presyo ng mga bilihin,” said PLM president Leody de Guzman in a statement. “Hindi ito ramdam ng taumbayan.”
He posited that it was due to stagnant wages amid rising food prices. He cited the National Capital Region (NCR) as the only region with a wage increase through the recent approval of Wage Order No. NCR-25. He, however, claimed that it does not benefit the majority of laborers.
“Hindi naman tumataas ang kanilang kita,” said De Guzman. “Maraming manggagawa ang hindi nakinabang sa Wage Order 25 dahil tadtad ito ng exemptions.”
Last Monday, PLM described the P35 wage increase in NCR as an “insult.”

“Hindi rin gumagana ang ‘wage distortion’ para mag-adjust ang suweldo ng mga tumatanggap ng above minimum (wage),” added De Guzman. “Ang wage hike ay hindi across-the-board at hindi nationwide.”
He added that the depreciation of the value of the peso caused the rising food prices.
To address the persisting economic challenges faced by Filipinos, PLM urged Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. to implement an across-the-board wage increase, price control, suspension of value added tax on oil, and ensuring local agriculture production instead of importation.
“Hinahamon namin si Marcos Junior na ideklara ang mga patakarang ito sa parating na SONA (State of the Nation Address) upang kagyat na tugunan ang pagsirit sa mga presyo, na mas ramdam ang paghagupit sa manggagawa’t mamamayang Pilipino sa dalawang taon ng kanyang termino,” said De Guzman.
On Labor Day last May, Marcos vowed to provide workers with more opportunities.
