(November 16, 2022) – After his recent violent action in their game, a player of the Jose Rizal University (JRU) Heavy Bombers has officially been removed from the basketball team following an inquiry conducted by the school.
John Amores, who run amok against their opponents from the College of Saint Benilde (CSB) Blazers last November 8 in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), was originally suspended for the rest of the season and banned from attending their practices, but JRU elevated his punishment by formally removing him from the team.
“He (Amores) will no longer be part of any sports program of JRU, effective immediately,” said the university in a statement. “All privileges accruing to Mr. Amores as a student-athlete have been cancelled and he has been further meted out the penalty of suspension from his classes and has been required to undergo community service.”
Amores will also undergo counseling “to cope with the strain of what has taken place in his young life.” JRU vowed to work with its athletics office to assist student-athletes with their developmental needs to prevent similar incidents from happening.
Commission on Higher Education chairperson Prospero De Vera III earlier said universities and colleges must strengthen their mental health programs to properly care for the welfare of their students, noting the pattern of violence that Amores has committed.
“To mitigate the impact of all these impositions and to recognize its moral obligations to assist its students, the university has set up a program with medical specialists in sports mental health and wellness for our athletes to address the difficulties of handling the mixed challenges of athletic competition, academics, and personal issues,” added JRU.
On Friday, Amores was slapped with a formal complaint for physical injury filed by two members of the Blazers—Taine Davis and Jimboy Pasturan—before the San Juan City Prosecutor’s Office.
Davis and Pasturan were among the players hurt by the hotheaded forward when he went on a punching spree in the final minutes of their game. CSB was awarded the win, 71-51, with only 3:22 left in the fourth quarter.
In response, the NCAA decided to indefinitely ban Amores. At least 13 other players from both squads who also got involved in the scuffle were punished with either a one-game or two-game suspension.
“Violence has no place in the NCAA. The (management committee) condemns and will not tolerate any acts of violence that will endanger our athletes, participants, officials, supporters, and the public. The safety of everyone is our primordial concern,” said the league in a ruling last week.
It was also revealed last week that Amores is facing another case for punching Mark Belmonte of the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in a preseason game last July.
While JRU apologized to the basketball community, Amores himself has yet to comment on the controversy.
