(August 22, 2024) – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) claimed on Thursday that the China Coast Guard (CCG) intentionally attempted to sink two of their vessels in a new maritime row between the two countries in the West Philippine Sea.
Last Monday, the National Security Council (NSC) reported that the BRP Bagacay and BRP Cape Engaño sustained severe damages after colliding with CCG vessels engaging in “unlawful and aggressive maneuvers” near Escoda Shoal during their resupply mission before dawn.
PCG spokesperson Cmdre. Jay Tarriela explained that the possible reason behind China’s latest aggression in the disputed territories might be the Philippines’ decision to keep BRP Teresa Magbanua in Escoda Shoal – a similar thing the country did with the BRP Sierra Madre at Ayungin Shoal.
“Paulit-ulit lang naman natin sinasabi na ito ang intention ni Admr. Ronnie Gil Gavan on why he deployed MRRV 9701 (BRP Teresa Magbanua) in Escoda Shoal is para pangalagaan ang ating karapatan dito at siguraduhing walang yamang-dagat na masisira,” said Tarriela.
He furthered that the resupply ships continued their mission amid sustaining damages for soldiers stationed in the country’s occupied outposts.
“I’m not really sure what are the innovative ways na ginawa ng tropa natin but the mere fact that they were able to deliver the supplies to our coast guard personnel in different maritime features just showed how brave and patriotic these coast guard personnel are,” added Tarriela.
The CCG earlier blamed the collision on the PCG ships for allegedly entering the Xianbin Reef (Escoda Shoal) without permission from the Chinese government. The shoal, however, is only 75 nautical miles off the coast of Palawan and within the country’s exclusive economic zone.
The incident came less than two weeks after two Chinese aircraft dropped flares in the path of the country’s air force conducting a routine patrol over the contested Scarborough Shoal last Thursday.
Pivoting his foreign policy to a “friend to all” approach, Pres. Bongbong Marcos urged the PCG never to be provoked by China’s bullying tactics.
