(July 25, 2024) – Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. already received the document from the International Criminal Court (ICC) identifying Sen. Bato Dela Rosa and several police officials as suspects in the merciless war on drugs, former senator Antonio Trillanes IV claimed on Thursday.
Trillanes posted on X the document transmitted by the Philippine Embassy in Hague, Netherlands to Marcos last July 3. He explained that he’s not authorized to disclose the details, leaving the discretion to Marcos.
“Ang bottomline, it’s now up to the Philippine government, kay President Marcos kung anong gagawin niya dito sa information na ito,” said Trillanes on One News’ Storycon.
Marcos previously asserted that the government would not cooperate with the ICC. However, his growing rift with former president Rodrigo Duterte, who ordered the brutal war on drugs, could change his stance.
Aside from Dela Rosa, also included in the document are former and active officials of the Philippine National Police (PNP), namely Oscar Albayalde, Romeo Caramat Jr., Edilberto Leonardo, and Eleazar Mata. Dela Rosa, a former PNP chief, is considered the main architect of Duterte’s bloody war on drugs.
“Primary suspects sila or principals by indispensable cooperation,” said Trillanes. “Whether kung kasama sila sa first batch ng warrant or hindi, hindi natin malalaman kasi at this point, it’s just a waiting game for us.”
Dela Rosa simply dismissed Trillanes’ revelation.
“What’s new? My name has always been mentioned since 2016,” said Dela Rosa, referring to the start of Duterte’s violent rule. “Seems like a broken record.”
Dela Rosa, a staunch ally of Duterte, admitted last January that he fears a possible arrest by the ICC.
Trillanes furthered that Caramat’s role is “critical evidence” in the investigation of the ICC on the crimes against humanity committed by Duterte.
“Dito makikita ‘yung demeanor ni Duterte as the mastermind and policymaker when it was brought to attention na itong specific na police officer na ito ay involved sa extrajudicial killings,” added Trillanes, noting that Caramat was promoted by Duterte for killing 31 suspected drug traffickers in Bulacan in 2017.
Citing testimonies from witnesses, Trillanes added that Leonardo was the “paymaster,” while Mata coordinated the number of killed drug suspects on the ground.
Albayalde, meanwhile, succeeded Dela Rosa as PNP chief in 2018.
Human rights groups reported that around 30,000 individuals were killed during Duterte’s inhumane war on drugs.
