(July 21, 2021) – Sen. Ping Lacson and Senate President Tito Sotto III on Tuesday revealed their intention to seek the highest government posts in the 2022 elections, the first tandem to confirm political plans, deviating from the strategy of other prospective candidates who have remained coy.
Sotto told the media that his political partnership with Lacson has already been set in stone as they kicked off their consultative meetings with local government units two weeks ago. Lacson will run for president while Sotto will be his vice president.
“Siguro nung nag-consultative meeting naman kami, ‘yung iba namang kasama naming consumer groups, commuter groups, alumni, tingin nila ‘yung programa namin at saka background is a very good combination,” said Sotto on ABS-CBN’s TeleRadyo.
Sotto’s announcement, however, no longer came as a surprise since he and Lacson started dropping hints about their electoral bids in previous months. They will hold an official launching event on August 4 when they introduce the teams that will help them in their campaign.
Sotto said their core campaign promise rests on three principles: Kakayahan, katapangan, at katapatan. He also said they identify themselves neither as pro-administration or pro-opposition, insisting they stand on neutral ground to provide Filipinos competent options for their next leaders.
“Hindi namin kokontrahin ‘yung magagandang ginagawa ng kasalukuyang administrasyon. Kokontrahin namin ‘yung mga hindi magagandang ginagawa o kakulangan,” said Sotto.
Both Sotto and Lacson have long experiences in government service. Sotto started as a one-term vice mayor in Quezon City before he completed his first two terms as senator by 2004. He was re-elected for two consecutive terms starting from 2010 until next year.
Lacson, a former chief of the Philippine National Police, served his first two terms as a senator for twelve years starting in 2001. He ran for president in 2004 but lost to Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. He can seek re-election as senator next year if he decides to cancel his second presidential bid.
Lacson, an independent politician, is not a member of Sotto’s Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) but party officials, in earlier interviews, expressed support to their chairman’s political plans.
Lacson previously warned fellow politicians about running for president in the 2022 elections because of the handful of problems the winner would inherit from President Rodrigo Duterte.
Some of the potential senators that NPC is targeting, meanwhile, include Deputy House Speaker Loren Legarda, Sorsogon Gov. Chiz Escudero, and former Sen. JV Ejercito who have confirmed their plan to return to the Senate. Gringo Honasan and Goyo Larrazabal are also in the initial list.
Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian, Sen. Richard Gordon, Sen. Joel Villanueva, and Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri could also be part of the lineup.

“Pangako namin sa taong bayan ay itutuloy namin ang performance based public service at hindi pamumulitika lamang,” said Zubiri.
