(July 16, 2021) – The Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), headed by Senate President Tito Sotto III, has no intention to join the broad coalition led by Hugpong ng Pagbabago, with plans to field its own standard-bearers in the 2022 elections.
NPC legal counsel Atty. Gregorio Larrazabal on Thursday said they would be put on a tight spot if they forge an alliance with the regional party supporting Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio’s possible presidential candidacy.
“It would be difficult for the NPC to support the presidential and vice presidential candidacy of another person other than the chairman of the party, which is Senate President Sotto. That’s a given,” said Larrazabal on One PH’s ‘Wag Po. “I doubt if kasama kami roon.

Five major political parties have started talking to Hugpong ng Pagbabago over the past month to form a formidable alliance ahead of the 2022 elections. It includes Lakas–Christian Muslim Democrats, Nacionalista Party, National Unity Party, People’s Reform Party, and Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino.
It remains unclear if they have already signed the memorandum of agreement stating all political parties will fully support all the candidates Hugpong ng Pagbabago chooses.
This would essentially deprive the aforementioned groups of their chance to field their own nominees because Hugpong ng Pagbabago will back Duterte-Carpio. She has yet to disclose her final plans, similar to the tactics made by his father President Rodrigo Duterte in 2016.
Sotto, meanwhile, has rumored plans to run for vice president alongside Sen. Ping Lacson as a possible running mate. Lacson, an independent lawmaker, is not a member of NPC but the party would most likely support him if he and Sotto announce their decision.

“They are pretty clear na, if they’re going to run, they’re going to run as a tandem,” said Larrazabal. “I (will) wait for them to make the official announcement on what their plans are. But I’m telling you, ang daming tao na medyo excited if ever papasok sila sa race.”
NPC would also field a senatorial slate, which includes Antique Rep. Loren Legarda, Sorsogon Gov. Chiz Escudero, Gringo Honasan, and JV Ejercito. Incumbents Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian, Sen. Richard Gordon, and Sen. Joel Villanueva are also included.
Larrazabal, who might also run for senator, said Sen. Manny Pacquiao could be considered by NPC as well if he “decides to join them.” Pacquiao faces difficulty after another faction emerged within Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan, fueling rumors of his ouster as president.

Larrazabal also downplayed the recent Pulse Asia survey where Sotto placed third among preferred vice presidential candidates, while Lacson placed seventh among preferred presidential bets.
“When you talk about poll numbers, whatever numbers you have, one month before the elections, wala ‘yun. At this point in time, those numbers will not hold. Guaranteed, magbabago ‘yan,” said Larrazabal.
