(August 2, 2021) – Vice President Leni Robredo on Sunday encouraged Filipinos to donate to community pantries anew to help poor families during the two-week lockdown in Metro Manila as government cash aid remains uncertain.
Buying from small businesses would also help struggling workers get by, according to Robredo, hoping that the public will come together to provide for the needs of the marginalized. She also suggested the possibility of adopting a family to ensure their needs will be met amid the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).
“Bilhan natin ‘yung mga nagsara para tulong sa kanila, lalo na ‘yung mga mas maliliit (na negosyo),” said Robredo on her weekly radio program. “Kung merong community na kakilala na hindi nakakapasok sa trabaho at no work-no pay, baka puwedeng tulungan ‘yung pamilya. Baka puwedeng mag-donate sa community pantries.”
Some organizations have already stepped up to the challenge.
Labor groups led by Defend Jobs Philippines will begin a flag brigade campaign on Friday to help community pantry organizers determine the needs of families in various communities, taking inspiration from a social movement in Malaysia.
In this project, families willing to help can display a green cloth outside their homes to help volunteers identify donors. Households in need, on the other hand, can display a red cloth.
Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, the newly elected president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, also asked for donations to feed the hungry in Caloocan, Malabon, and Navotas.
“Lockdowns for the poor can mean hunger, especially those who are daily wage earners, those who live a hand-to-mouth existence,” said David. “Many have asked us to find ways and means through digital technology to make it easy for them to contribute whatever amount they are willing to share to our efforts to address the problem of hunger in our communities in the coming days.”
FEED THE HUNGRY CAMPAIGN

Metro Manila and nearby provinces will be placed under ECQ, the third time since COVID-19 raged last year, from August 6 to 20 in anticipation of the surge brought by the more contagious Delta variant.
National Economic and Development Authority secretary Karl Chua projected that the country would lose at least P210 billion for the two-week lockdown. He estimated close to half a million people will be jobless as fewer establishments will be allowed to operate.
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque on Monday assured there would be cash assistance of up to P4,000 per family although he is still clueless about where to get funds.
While the situation remains unclear, Robredo urged Filipinos to step up and assist each other.
“Wala pa kasing kasiguraduhan kung may ayudang darating. Ang sabi walang pondo pero umaasa pa rin tayo na magkakaroon,” said Robredo. “Just in case na walang ayuda, tayo na lang ‘yung mag-ayuda sa mga nangangailangan. Isipin (natin) ‘yung mawawalan ng hanapbuhay ngayong ECQ.”
