(July 23, 2021) – A new movement has taken over social media.
Hundreds of artworks have swarmed social media in recent days to convey the dissent of Filipinos against the injustices of the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte.
But artists aren’t the only ones who have joined the creative campaign—even normal citizens have expressed support.
It all started with the thought-provoking art posted by “Tarantadong Kalbo” that shows one standing fist while all the others are bowing down, carrying the caption “Tumindig” or to stand firm.
It appears to be largely inspired by the iconic picture of a man in Germany who was the only one who refused to salute dictator Adolf Hitler among a throng of people, as pointed out by UP professor Ramon Guillermo.
More than 12,000 users have reposted it on Twitter, garnering 53,400 reactions since it was posted on July 17. The hashtag #Tumindig was one of the top trending topics on Thursday night.

Kevin Eric Raymundo, the artist behind “Tarantadong Kalbo” said in an interview with Philstar Life that he wanted to produce art that would “encapsulate” activists’ feelings in the time of Duterte’s regime.
Aside from fellow artists, Raymundo’s viral work has been recreated by several sectoral groups to echo their calls for justice on Duterte’s final year in office.
Karapatan carried a message seeking the release of Renalyn Tejero, the Lumad activist arrested in Cagayan de Oro City due to murder and attempted murder charges. She denied all the accusations leveled against her.

This day, four months ago, our paralegal, HR worker Renalyn Tejero was arrested based on trumped-up charges.

Youth groups also published their version, encouraging the younger generation to stand up to all forms of injustices in society. Individuals and groups supporting the LGBTQIA community also joined the “Tumindig” movement.
