(February 16, 2021) – The Supreme Court, sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal, has dismissed the election protest of a former senator, the son of the country’s late dictator, against the vice president, a court spokesman said on Tuesday, ending almost five years of political uncertainty.
Lawyer Keith Hosaka has to speak to reporters clarifying the high tribunal dismissed the entire protest after the legal counsel of former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr said the PET has not made a ruling on the third basis of their election protest.
“The 15-member of the Presidential Electoral Tribunal unanimously dismissed the entire electoral protest,” Hosaka said, reading the decision.

He said seven justices fully concurred with the dismissal ruling, while eight others only concurred with the result.
Marcos’ lawyer, Vic Rodriguez, had earlier said the case was not thrown totally because the 15 magistrates only junked their second cause of action which called for a recount in Iloilo, Camarines Sur and Negros Oriental. He said they have asked the tribunal to nullify votes in the Muslim provinces.

Vice President Leni Robredo, citing the PET’s decision, also said the Marcos camp has a wrong interpretation of the ruling.
“Mali yung interpretation ng camp ni Mr. Marcos at yung decision ay dismissing the entire protest,” Robredo said, heaving a sigh of relief after the tribunal announced its decision.
The entire ruling was not available as of press time.
Robredo, who was elected separately as vice president in 2016, defeated Marcos by a narrow margin, prompting the former senator to file a protest seeking a recount of the votes.
The tribunal granted his request for a recount and reviewed the ballots in three provinces he chose where he claimed Robredo’s camp padded the votes to favor her.
But the tribunal found no irregularity and, in the recount, Robredo’s margin even widened.
The widow of a former interior secretary in the past administration, Robredo, who was also a human rights lawyer, said the victory inspired her to work for the good of the Filipinos.
“Mula naman noong umpisa, kahit na mayroong electoral protest, we have not allowed it to distract us from the more important work of serving our people,” Robredo said. “But the affirmation that we received from PET today will help us focus more on the more important work of serving our people. Lalo itong magpapalakas ng ating pagkilos at pagtulong lalo na ngayong panahon ng matinding krisis.”

She declined to send a message to her political foe.
“Yung sa’kin, mas mensahe talaga ng pasasalamat sa lahat na kahit sinubukan nilang bahiran yung legitimacy ng aking mandato ay nagtiwala pa rin. Para sa akin enough na yun,” she added.
Administration officials, including Salvador Panelo, have called on the Marcos camp to accept the decision of the PET.
Opposition lawmakers also released their own statements on the matter, calling on everyone to move forward after the PET had issued its ruling.
Robredo echoed these sentiments during her press briefing, adding that government officials should respond to the pressing needs of the people at present.
“Pero now that this issue has been definitely settled, ang hinihingi ko lang sa lahat, lalo na sa supporters natin, is to put this rancor behind us and let us move forward together,” Robredo said.
“Isantabi muna natin ‘yung mga sama ng loob, isantabi muna ‘yung ‘di pagkakaintindihan, isantabi muna yung away kasi maraming umaasa sa’tin. Ako, hinihikayat ko ang lahat na let us join hands, let us unify, let us focus on the work in front of us.”
