(December 19, 2024) – The Philippines was minutes away from defeating Vietnam in a match with the same magnitude as the famed “Miracle of Hanoi” in 2010.
Six minutes into added time in the second half in the 2024 ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup (AMEC) at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on Wednesday, Philippines goalkeeper Patrick Deyto decided to catch a corner kick from Vietnam. He, however, missed and Doan Ngoc Tan was in the right place to slot in the gift from the heavens.
Vietnam leveled on the brink of death, 1-1, to deny the Philippines an upset win.
Jarvey Gayoso, who subbed in the second half, gave the Philippines a one-nil lead in the 68th minute, whipping the crowd into a frenzy. It was his first goal of the tournament.
Doan, however, spoiled the party.
When the final whistle blew, Deyto took time before standing up from the pitch. He was disappointed. The weight of the draw, which felt like a stinging loss, was on his shoulders.
It not only cost the Filipino booters three points in a crucial fixture in Group B but also deprived the crowd of celebrating a victory against the Southeast Asia powerhouse for the first time in 12 years.
Deyto, who plays for Kaya-Iloilo Football Club, touted their defense against Vietnam despite the late collapse.
“It’s been the Achilles’ heel of our team for the last three games. We conceded from three set-pieces,” said the 34-year-old shot-stopper. “As the goalkeeper, I take responsibility. I need to do better.”
The last time the Philippines outlasted Vietnam was in the 2012 ASEAN Football Federation Championship, now AMEC, with Chieffy Caligdong delivering the lone goal.
In 2010, the Philippines made the improbable feat of shocking Vietnam, 2-0, in the group stage of the AFF Championship in Hanoi. It was dubbed the “Miracle of Hanoi,” as the Philippines, with goals from Phil Youngshuband and Chris Greatwich, won over Vietnam for the first time.
While it was easy to pin the blame on Deyto, Philippines coach Albert Capellas defended his players, saying the results have nothing to do with set pieces.
“I never will blame a player for a mistake. Never. All of them, they have my 100% support. A player who does not play is a player who does not commit a mistake. Football is a game of mistakes,” said Capellas in the media conference.
He added that he will only hold players accountable if they’re afraid of the ball, have no fighting spirit, and do not “feel the shirt.”

“I’m very sad for them because I know how they train, I know how much they fight for the national team, I know how much they want this win and I think we deserve it,” said Capellas.
Nevertheless, the Philippines has no time to dwell in the heartbreaking stalemate. The team flew to Indonesia today to face the well-rested host in a do-or-die clash on Saturday.
A lower result would eliminate the Philippines from contention for the semifinals. With three points from draws in as many matches, the country sits in fourth place behind Indonesia, Myanmar, and Vietnam.
The nationals haven’t won against Indonesia in five straight matches, including two losses.
“I really think if they (players) fight like they did today (against Vietnam) and we create the chances that we create also in the other games, I think we have a chance to beat that game,” said Capellas.
