(October 4, 2024) – The new coach of the Philippine men’s national football team (PMNFT) on Friday vowed to transform the squad into an offensive-minded unit to restore its glory days.
Albert Capellas said he is looking for highly technical players, who are also smart, fast-thinking, and can handle the pressure, to create more attacking chances to win.
“The Philippines is a big country with 100 million (people) and I’m 100% sure there are very good players out there,” said Capellas during a media conference held by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF). “I already scouted a lot of them and I can see some with a lot of quality that can help us to play the way we want to play.”
Football analysts said the PMNFT has a “striker problem” based on its performances in recent international tilts.
Since star Phil Younghusband retired in 2019, the Philippines has been looking for a surefire scorer.
The 57-year-old Capellas said he wants to employ possession-based football, integrating the so-called “high press” to win the ball back swiftly and avoiding unnecessary long passes.
“We (PMNFT) want to play offensive that can create more chances,” added the Spanish tactician. “This is not a romantic way to play football but I think the best way to increase the chances to win more games.”
He will bring his 33-year coaching experience, including stints with the famed youth academy of FC Barcelona for over a decade.
He also led Denmark to the quarterfinals of the 2021 European Under-21 Championship.
Last month, the PFF announced that Capellas will replace Tom Saintfient, who resigned in August ahead of the PMNFT’s campaign in the 2024 Merdeka Cup in Malaysia.
Capellas will make his coaching debut for the Philippines in the King’s Cup in Thailand on October 11.
“I’m happy to be here. I hope I can help with my experience, with my knowledge, and with my hardwork for Philippine football to grow,” said Capellas.
