(January 25, 2021) – Manny Pacquiao may have just found his next opponent.
In an Instagram post on Monday, 22-year-old boxing star Ryan Garcia posted a photo of a fight poster for a clash between him and Pacquiao dubbed “A Dream to Reality.”
“It’s an honor to share the ring with @mannypacquiao. I will always respect what you did in and out the ring,” said Garcia in the caption. “Here’s to the best man winning.”
Pacquiao, however, has yet to comment if the fight has been indeed set.
Reports have circulated in the last few months that the camps of Garcia and Pacquiao have been in deep talks about staging a fight.
As early as January 2020, the flamboyant Garcia, still undefeated in 21 outings, has called out the “Pambansang Kamao” who he considers as his childhood hero. Garcia has seen a meteoric rise since his phenomenal debut in 2016 and now holds the WBC interim lightweight belt after beating Luke Campbell last January 2.
The 42-year-old Pacquiao, meanwhile, hasn’t fought since his victory over Keith Thurman in July 2019 gave him the WBA super welterweight title. The eight-division world champion holds a 62-7-2 record.
In a recent interview with ESPN, Garcia once again gushed about how fighting Pacquiao would be a fulfillment of his lifelong dreams.
“Manny’s a person I’ve always looked up to. You can’t say anything bad about Manny. I wouldn’t even be mad in the ring with him. Even if he hit me, I don’t know how I would react. I would be just, like, ‘Yo, man, you hit me! I can’t believe this, yes! Hit me more!’ He’s been an inspiration to me,” said Garcia.
UFC star Conor McGregor was also being linked as the next opponent for Pacquiao, although that may be off the table for now after McGregor’s defeat to Dustin Poirier on UFC 257 on Sunday.
McGregor, however, has earlier said facing Pacquiao this year is “almost a certainty.”
Pacquiao has said he’s looking at two more fights this year before possibly finally calling it quits to focus on his rumored presidential run in the 2022 elections.
Garcia, meanwhile, also said he wants to fight WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis first before going toe to toe with Pacquiao.
“That’s why I feel like maybe after Gervonta, hopefully, this is out of respect and this is not calling him out, I don’t want people to think I’m calling him out that’s stupid,” said Garcia in an interview with Rich Eisen. “I’m just saying, ‘Can we share the ring together and please pass the torch to me?’”
