(January 28, 2021) – The Philippines’ men’s national basketball team, Gilas Pilipinas, will play next month in the Middle East after the country’s hosting of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers for Group A was cancelled due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19) restrictions.
The Philippines was grouped with Indonesia, South Korea and Thailand in Group A. They were supposed to play at Clark but travel restrictions imposed on three dozen countries forced organizers to look for an alternative venue.
Al Panlilio, president of the Samahang Basketbol sa Pilipinas, said Gilas players continued with their training for the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers next month as the organizing committee announced the games will be played in Doha, Qatar.
Panlilio commended Qatar for stepping up and agreeing to host the remaining games of Group A.
“We are thankful to FIBA and the Qatar Basketball Federation for all their efforts to make sure that the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers for Group A will push through,” Panlilio said in a press statement.

“The SBP wanted nothing else than to be one with the international basketball community as it attempts to bounce back in 2021 after taking a huge hit during the pandemic,” Panlilio said last Tuesday after announcing Philippines’ cancellation of hosting the games.
“We’ve exerted a lot of effort into our hosting of the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers and this is why it is with great sadness that we announce it is no longer going to happen.”
Panlilio thanked the International Basketball Federation and its partner organizations for their flexibility.
“The games will be played within the same timeframe but we’ll be communicating with the Qatar Basketball Federation for the final schedule as there might be necessary adjustments since they are now hosting 12 teams from the original four,” Panlilio added.
Panlilio also expressed confidence about the readiness of the team as they proceeded with their training as usual.
“Our national team pool was saddened when they found out they won’t be playing in Clark but they did not slow down with their preparations. Now with the pool nearing completion and a definite location for their games, the SBP is confident that they will step it up into another gear,” Panlilio said.
“We’re confident that our Gilas Pilipinas Men’s team will be ready for competition come February as the SBP continues to work with the IATF to seek their guidance about the protocols necessary for our team to travel to and from Doha.”
