(June 28, 2021) – Political candidates allied with President Rodrigo Duterte may be “vulnerable” to lose in the 2022 elections because of the economy’s bad shape, former Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio said.
Carpio disputed claims that the administration-backed candidates, including Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, would be “unbeatable” in the upcoming polls. He pointed out the country’s economic condition would greatly factor in the voting because of its direct impact on Filipinos.
“Itong eleksyon na ito ay very unique kasi our economy is in shambles,” said Carpio on Ted Failon and DJ Chacha sa Radyo 5 last week. “Historically, ‘pag masama ‘yung economy, ‘yung administration candidate ay natatalo. That’s a basic fact.”

Last year, the Philippines suffered its worst economic contraction since the end of World War II at 9.5%, primarily driven by business closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 4.5 million Filipinos were out of work, registering a 10.3% unemployment rate, the highest in 15 years.
Carpio also downplayed the partnerships forged by some political parties supporting Duterte. He said economic problems could not be brushed off easily for someone running under the administration’s ticket.
“I think very vulnerable sila because of the economy,” added Carpio, who heads opposition coalition 1SAMBAYAN. “Mananalo ang oposisyon kung ganito lang. Liyamado ang oposisyon dito because of the very bad economy.”
No one has officially declared to run for president three months before the official filing of candidacy. Duterte-Carpio, who has consistently topped presidential surveys, said she is still weighing her options after her colleagues at Hugpong ng Pagbabago urged her to replace her father next year.

Even if Duterte-Carpio may be a possible frontrunner, Carpio was confident that she may not be as invincible as others may have thought.
“Lalo ‘pag daughter niya (Duterte) o anak niya ang tumatakbo, that is a continuation of the policy of the current administration. Sabi nga nila, the fruit does not fall farther from the tree,” stressed Carpio, adding the public should ask about their position on issues and look back on the candidates’ qualifications. “Ang track record ng administration candidate, susunod lang ‘yan kay Duterte kasi ang kandidato niya, proxy niya e. Lalo pa ‘pag ang kandidato niya, anak niya.”
Carpio added the issue on the West Philippine Sea would also heavily factor in the 2022 elections because of its impact on food security and sovereignty.
Carpio, meanwhile, said they will proceed with their plan to unite the opposition and field only one candidate in the 2022 elections to restore public trust in the government.
Some of their initial nominees have declined the offer to run as 1SAMBAYAN’s standard-bearer while others are still mulling over possibilities, including Vice President Leni Robredo.
