(July 2, 2021) – A staunch critic of President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday said he planned to expose a major corruption issue, promising to show documents on corrupt practices done by the leader and his long-time aide even before he rose to power in 2016.
Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV has accused Duterte’s office of being the “most corrupt” among all government agencies. He also hit Senator Emmanuel Pacquiao for accusing the Department of Health (DOH) of corruption, calling it a “weak” bombshell.
Trillanes first revealed his plan in an online post on Thursday evening after Duterte promised to cooperate with any probe into alleged corrupt deals within his government.

He also brought up his previous challenge urging Duterte to sign a waiver disclosing P2.2-billion worth of stashed wealth in a local bank.
Trillanes had said the country’s leader refused to include this in his statement of assets, liabilities, and net worth back when he was still Davao City mayor.
In 2017, Trillanes said he obtained copies of these records from a private citizen named Joseph de Mesa.
“Ilabas mo ang tapang mo rito, ipakita mo na mali ako,” Trillanes had said back then. “Sinabi niya na papatunayan n’ya. Wala naman. So, Mr. President, panahon na at mamaya’t mayain kita. Hindi ko bibitawan ang isyu na ito.”
Duterte’s office has not immediately issued a response to Trillanes’ challenge.
Go, for his part, accused the former Navy officer of politicking for only speaking out about these matters months before the election period.
“Sanay na tayo riyan,” Go said in a press statement.
Trillanes, however, denied this allegation, saying the public should know about these matters because they are public officials.
Trillanes was nominated to run as a standard-bearer of the broad opposition coalition, 1Sambayan, but he said he would be willing to make way for the country’s vice president and top opposition leader if she decides to run for president.
