(April 19, 2021) – At least two people died and close to 70,000 people were displaced after Typhoon “Bising” dumped heavy rains and strong winds in the central Philippines, submerging wide areas under flood water, disaster officials said on Monday.
Regional disaster officials said Alberto Wales, 79, died after a coconut tree fell on his head in Southern Leyte, one of the provinces heavily pummeled by the typhoon internationally known as “Surigae”. He was sent to the Anahawan District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
In northern Cebu, another woman named Olivia Popoy, 47, also died after a coconut tree fell on their house in Catmon town, which experienced strong winds on the evening of Sunday. Both her husband and her daughter survived, according to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).
More than 18,000 families across the country were evacuated to safer areas from the storm in Bicol and Eastern Visayas.
Sea transportation was suspended with more than 3,200 passengers stranded in various seaports based in Bicol, Central and Eastern Visayas, as well as Northeastern Mindanao.
Some flights were also cancelled in light of the typhoon.
