(May 5, 2025) – Opposition candidates in the senatorial race in the upcoming midterm elections topped the recent survey conducted among college students, a stark difference from the results of national polls.
According to the survey by the Center for Student Initiatives (CSI), former senator Bam Aquino topped the list with 79.6%. He is known for his education-focused policies.
Labor leader and lawyer Luke Espiritu followed Aquino with 70%. He has built a reputation for advocating for workers.
Third on the survey is former senator Kiko Pangilinan with 69.75%. He has centered his campaign on agriculture and food security.
The survey was conducted among students from 32 public and private colleges and universities across the country from April 11 to 25.
The results painted a different picture compared to national polls like those of Social Weather Stations and Pulse Asia, where candidates from the senatorial slate of Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. and allies of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio continue to dominate.
“(The majority of the respondents) wish economic issues such as wages, employment, and high prices were reflected in candidates’ platforms. (Around) 84.2% answered political issues such as the banning of political dynasties, charter change, and political patronage, while 89.4% answered education issues,” said CIS in a post on Facebook.
Other progressive and independent candidates also ranked high in the survey, including labor leader Leody de Guzman (49.25%), farmer leader Danilo Ramos (42.75%), Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas (41.35%), and former Commission on Audit commissioner Heidi Mendoza (38.95%), who placed fifth to eighth, respectively.
“Sinasalamin ng student mock elections ang botong hindi impluwensyado ng ayuda, pamemera, pananakot, at pambubudol ng mga dinastiya. Pitong araw na lang at may tsansa tayong palayain ang masa sa panlilinlang ng mga dinastiya. Tama na ang trapo!” said Espiritu in a post on Facebook today, acknowledging the results of the survey.
Also part of the survey’s top 12 were Makati Mayor Abby Binay, former senator Ping Lacson, former Department of the Interior and Local Government secretary Benhur Abalos, former lawmaker Teddy Casiño, and ACT Teachers Rep. France Castro.
