(May 25, 2025) – Pres. Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. on Sunday departed to attend the 46th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Malaysia, where regional leaders are expected to discuss measures against the new tariffs imposed by the United States (US).
He told reporters preliminary discussions regarding the region’s response to the rising global trade tensions had already begun.
“We have already made informal consultations with our fellow member states and their representatives with the [ASEAN] Chairman, PM [Prime Minister] Anwar [Ibrahim], on this subject. It is something that we have to discuss, and it is something that we have to respond to,” said Marcos before boarding his flight, as quoted by the Philippine News Agency.
Marcos stressed that ASEAN must build a consensus despite the varying trade dependencies of its member countries.
“We must find a way to reach consensus among the disparate situations the different member states are operating under,” he said.
Last month, the US announced a series of adjusted tariffs for over 180 nations to address alleged unfair trade practices and protect its economic interest, among other reasons. ASEAN countries were slapped with tariffs ranging from 10% to 49%, with the Philippines receiving a 17% imposition.
In response, the ASEAN said they are pursuing a non-confrontational approach, which leans on dialogue, diplomatic efforts, regional unity and economic integration, and exploration of alternative trade partnerships. Marcos has backed the bloc’s decision.
Economic managers of the Marcos administration estimated that the Philippines will only lose 0.1% of its gross domestic product until 2027 amid the new US-imposed tariffs.

Marcos, meanwhile, said the Philippines will also champion the role of ASEAN in addressing regional challenges, including the territorial disputes in the South China Sea and the ongoing crisis in Myanmar.
“I will also highlight the Philippines’ commitment to the development of a common regional framework for ethical and responsible Artificial Intelligence aligned with ASEAN values,” he added.
Executive secretary Lucas Bersamin, Justice Sec. Boying Remulla, and Agrarian Reform Sec. Conrad Estrella III will be the government’s caretakers during Marcos’ absence.
