Cop injured after attack by man he was about to arrest in Parañaque

(May 24, 2025) – A police officer was injured after a man he was about to arrest suddenly attacked him with a knife in Parañaque City, authorities said on Saturday.

CCTV footage captured the moment P/Staff Sgt. Carlo Sotelo Navarro was assaulted while responding to a disturbance along Creek Drive 1, Valley 8.

In the video, Navarro is seen standing at the entrance of a narrow alley when a man approaches and strikes him with a wooden plank. Seconds later, the same man, now armed with a broomstick and a butcher knife, lunges at the officer and repeatedly hits him. The two struggled and eventually disappeared from the camera’s view.

Navarro sustained three head wounds and another to the chest.

“‘Yung papalapit siya sa’kin bigla naman akong na-out of balance. Saka siya sumugod sa’kin para itaga ‘yung hawak-hawak niyang butcher knife,” said Navarro.

“‘Yung pagsugod niya sakin kung makikita niyo sa kuha sa CCTV talagang desidong patayin ako. Alam niya kung saan papatamaan ‘yung fatal parts.”

Although the CCTV didn’t show how the fight ended, police said the suspect was later subdued and arrested with help from nearby residents.

The attacker, identified only as “Arnold,” has a history of causing trouble in the neighborhood. Police said he is allegedly a drug user who has been in and out of jail.

“Ganon raw talaga siya pag naka-high o nakatira ng drugs, kung sino matipuhan niya ‘yun ‘yung hahamunin niya ng away,” said BF Homes Police sub-station commander P/Maj. Elmer Accanta.

During questioning, the suspect admitted to the attack.

“Problema lang sa pamilya, stress,” said “Arnold.” “Nahihingi ako ng paumanhin sa nagawa ko sa inyo. Nagawa ko lang ‘yon dahil problemado ako.”

The suspect is facing multiple charges, including direct assault, alarm and scandals, and possibly frustrated murder.
