(October 14, 2022) – Department of Justice (DOJ) secretary Boying Remulla on Thursday was urged by the public to resign after his son was arrested over alleged possession of high-grade marijuana but President Bongbong Marcos Jr. said the clamor has “no basis.”
Marcos, in an interview with reporters on Friday, noted that the pronouncements issued by Remulla about the arrest of his son, Juanito Jose Remulla III, were proper as he added that the executive should not meddle with the judiciary.
“I think the calls for him to resign have no basis. You call for somebody to resign if he’s not doing his job or that they have misbehaved in that job. He has done quite the contrary,” said Marcos.
On Tuesday, the younger Remulla was arrested in an operation led by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group over a parcel that reportedly contains almost one kilogram of kush amounting to P1.3 million.
In a statement, his father, who was appointed by Marcos, promised not to interfere with the case.
“A person should always face the consequences of their actions,” said Remulla in a handwritten statement. “I will let justice take its own course. I thank the PDEA for doing their job, without fear or favor. I have no conflict with them.”
But many believe that Remulla should step down considering the wide influence of his position. Others also noted a potential conflict of interest since the DOJ functions as the prosecution arm of the government.
Netizens also pointed out the need for public officials to have “delicadeza.”
With his own son facing drug charges, Boying Remulla has lost all moral authority to be Secretary of Justice. I join calls for him to resign immediately.

Respectfully asking DOJ Secretary Boying Remulla to resign.
For you to save whatever honor you have left. And for you to focus on your family. Seems like they need your utmost attention.#BoyingRemullaResign

So, it’s the son pala of the DOJ Secretary na nahuli sa isang drug offense. RESIGN Sec Remulla, if you have DELICADEZA. Unfortunately… I’ll stop there…. pic.twitter.com/8r4PzRR46c

Some slammed Remulla for his wish for his son to find “a path to redemption,” a stark contrast with what happened to poor individuals at the height of the brutal war on drugs of former President Rodrigo Duterte. Remulla was a staunch ally of Duterte.
Among the most prominent cases was that of the 17-year-old Kian Loyd Delos Santos who was gunned down by police officers in Caloocan in 2017. Only his case led to a murder conviction of law enforcers despite the outcry of groups to bring to justice the perpetrators of killings.
Delos Santos was just one of around 30,000 who died under the inhumane war on drugs, including those executed by vigilante groups, according to human rights organizations.
Where 30,000+ people including kids were slaughtered in the Drug War, DOJ Sec. Boying Remulla’s son has his father citing “redemption” in a letter after being arrested for holding egregious amounts of drugs (pointing to large-scale sale).
Boying Remulla, RESIGN! #BoyingResign

Kian’s remains were exhumed as the lease on his grave expired last August. What about his path to redemption?
The only correct thing to do for Boying Remulla is to resign. https://t.co/6fkLvJ8JmT pic.twitter.com/05YVvPeqDw

“I wish my son a path to redemption”
This is what Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla said on the arrest of his 38-year old son, who allegedly possessed P1.3-M worth of suspected kush.
Meanwhile, many sons and daughters don’t have that path as they were killed. https://t.co/nTR3aitT8D

Remulla’s past remarks about the country’s drug menace also resurfaced. In an interview on CNN Philippines in 2019, Remulla, who was then a senior deputy majority leader in the House of Representatives, likened drug criminals to cockroaches. He’s also in favor of reinstating the death penalty for drug cases.

It’s all “death penalty for drug crimes” unless one’s own kin is involved, then it’s all about wishing them a path to redemption. pic.twitter.com/wUjYDIzsuq

Cavite Gov. Jonvic Remulla earlier confirmed to ABS-CBN News that his nephew was arrested in a drug bust. Like his elder brother, he promised not to interfere with the justice system, declaring he will expose any family member who tries to influence the case since they “will not tolerate an abuse of authority in any way.”
