(November 30, 2021) – The only son and namesake of Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos on Tuesday promised to continue President Rodrigo Duterte’s infrastructure program, “Build, Buld, Build” to stimulate the economy and generate more jobs in a post-pandemic period if he is elected into office next year.
During a visit at Eastern Samar, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr, the standard bearer of Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), said he wanted to create more jobs in the countryside to hasten the country’s economic recovery.
The former senator said his tandem with Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, the president’s daughter, will be crucial in his bid to unify the country.
Duterte was upset after his daughter decided to run for vice president despite her being a frontrunner in presidential opinion polls.
The Duterte administration’s centerpiece program sought to build more public infrastructure projects through Build, Build Build, saying this will help spur development in the often-neglected rural areas.
The project has received criticisms from lawmakers, economists, and sectoral groups due to the slow implementation of the projects, resulting in exacerbation of the country’s mounting debt, which nearly doubled from the start of Duterte’s term to P11.64 trillion in September.
The administration has only completed 11 out of over 100 projects since the start of the administration as of May, according to Duterte’s adviser Vivencio Dizon. Some 29 more projects are expected to be completed before 2022 ends.
Marcos announced his presidential bid nearly two months ago with a promise to “unify” Filipinos, in order to help them return to their normal lives from the COVID-19 pandemic crisis by spurring economic recovery.
