Businessman shot dead inside a passenger bus in Davao del Norte

(December 30, 2024) – A 54-year-old businessman was fatally shot inside a passenger bus traveling along the national highway in Carmen, Davao del Norte on Sunday, December 29.

The victim, identified as Jacob Arroyo from San Juan, Metro Manila, was in Davao for a business trip when the incident occurred around 1 p.m.

CCTV footage showed a man in a white shirt standing and firing a gun at Arroyo. The gunman then grabbed a bag from another passenger and moved toward the front of the bus.

Another suspect, stationed near the driver, showed a firearm and pointed it at the passengers, forcing the driver to stop the vehicle.

Panicked passengers and the driver scrambled to exit the bus as the suspects fled on a motorcycle driven by a civilian they allegedly flagged down.

Arroyo sustained a gunshot wound in the head and was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead-on-arrival.

Authorities suspect that the assailants had been monitoring Arroyo before the attack. Police are exploring multiple angles, including a potential business-related motive.

“Businessman itong biktima…napag-isip-isipan namin na baka ‘yung motibo nito is business-related…pero lahat ng anggulo tinitingnan natin,” said Deputy of Carmen Municipal Police Station P/Capt. Dennis Agosto.

The driver recounted being held at gunpoint, saying,”Pagtingin ko sa passenger mirror, nagpanic na ang nga tao. Pagkatapos ay tinutukan ako ng baril ng isang suspek at sinabing ipahinto ang bus. Nasa 20 meter pa ako nakahinto matapos ang pamamaril.”

Two persons of interest have been identified, and authorities are backtracking CCTV footage to trace the suspects’ movements.
