(July 30, 2021) – Vice President Leni Robredo should refrain from forming alliances with politicians who supported President Rodrigo Duterte’s unfair and brutal policies over the last five years, former senator Antonio Trillanes IV said on Friday.
Trillanes said the Magdalo Group will support Robredo if she decides to run as the opposition’s standard-bearer but not if she gives way to other candidates like Sen. Ping Lacson, who the former soldier described as an “enabler” of the Duterte administration.
“We should draw the line kung sino ‘yung mga puwedeng makipagsanib puwersa—nandiyan na ‘yung iba’t ibang sektor,” said Lacson on One News’ Agenda. “Pero ‘yung makipag-alyansa ka roon sa enablers ni Duterte, ibang usapan ‘yun kasi ‘yun nga ‘yung nais nating palitan.”
Robredo recently met with Lacson in an alleged bid to form a broad unity for the 2022 elections. Sen. Richard Gordon, who might also run for president, also confirmed having a separate talk with Robredo but nothing has so far been agreed upon.
Trillanes aired his frustration on social media after learning about these political meetings especially because Robredo’s camp has declined his invitations in previous months. He also recounted Lacson’s involvement in jailing Sen. Leila De Lima, Robredo’s fellow Liberal Party member, over drug charges.
“I saw that up-close, kung paano talagang biniktima si Senator Leila De Lima ng disinformation at itong sina Sen. Lacson ay isa sa mga naging instrumento para doon,” said Trillanes. “Makikipag-alyansa kayo roon at itutulak niyo as a potential standard-bearer ng oposisyon? That’s where we draw the line.”
But Robredo’s spokesperson Atty. Barry Gutierrez already dismissed claims that Robredo would officially give way to Lacson’s presidential candidacy, clarifying that the negotiations are still in the early stages. He also encouraged Trillanes to trust Robredo’s judgment.

Trillanes insisted the opposition doesn’t have to seek a political alliance with Lacson, saying it will defeat the purpose of rebuilding people’s trust in the government. He also questioned Lacson’s track record at a time when Duterte was pushing through with his questionable policies.
Trillanes: Opposition doesn’t need Lacson to win
#Agenda | Former senator Antonio Trillanes IV warns that the opposition’s message of change will be diluted if they ally with Sen. Panfilo Lacson, who is planning a presidential run in 2022. Trillanes says Lacson was heavily-involved in the hearing that led to the detention of Sen. Leila de Lima.

Lacson, a former Philippine National Police chief, initially supported Duterte’s promise to eradicate the drug problem. But his support withered in December 2016 after noticing the “double standard” in the bloody drug war, which he called last March “a failure.” He also called out Duterte’s statements in recent months, including his proposal to arm civilians.
But the long-time independent senator, who now belongs to Partido Reporma as chairman, also supported Duterte’s pet laws, including the controversial Anti-Terrorism Law.
Trillanes told Robredo to be more careful in her decision-making considering that the country’s future is at stake.
“You don’t need Ping Lacson to win,” said Trillanes. “Kapag pinasok kasi ‘yan sa hanay ng oposisyon, then ‘yung message of change, ‘yung opposition sa 2022 ay madi-dilute. Wala na ‘yung panawagan mong pagbabago kasi pinasok mo na itong Duterte enablers.”
