(February 7, 2025) – Progressive groups on Friday slammed Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio’s “cavalier attitude” despite her impeachment in the House of Representatives.
The Makabayan bloc stressed that Duterte-Carpio’s press conference only showed her “utter disregard” for the charges filed against her amid the public’s demand for accountability.
“Ipinapaalala natin sa bise presidente na ang impeachment ay hindi isang simpleng Valentine’s story. Ito ay tungkol sa milyun-milyong piso ng kaban ng bayan na hindi mapatunayan kung saan napunta,” said Kabataan Party-list Rep. Raoul Manuel in a joint statement with ACT Teachers Party-list and Gabriela Party-list.
Duterte-Carpio claimed that being left by a lover is more painful than being impeached. She also asked God to “save the Philippines” amid the issue.
Akbayan Party-list stressed that Filipinos should be the ones asking God to save them from Duterte-Carpio and her family’s “corruption, incompetence, and impunity.”
“Vice President Sara Duterte’s plea of ‘God save the Philippines’ is deeply ironic coming from someone who has consistently failed to save public funds from misuse, protect education from corruption, and defend our fisherfolk and frontliners from China’s harassment in the West Philippine Sea,” said Rep. Perci Cendaña.
Cendaña and the Makabayan bloc endorsed the first two impeachment complaints against Duterte-Carpio.

On Wednesday, 215 lawmakers in the House of Representatives voted to impeach Duterte-Carpio for her alleged misuse of confidential funds worth over P610 million and for issuing grave threats to Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr., first lady Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez, among other alleged constitutional violations.
Duterte-Carpio has repeatedly dismissed the allegations as merely “political attacks.”
Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero said the Senate will tackle Duterte-Carpio’s impeachment case after the elections in May.
Legal experts, however, noted that Marcos has the power to call for a special session to reconvene the Senate amid its recess.
