(November 28, 2024) – Lawmakers of the House of Representatives announced on Thursday the postponement of the probe on the controversial confidential funds spending by Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio amid the impending investigation by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
The committee on good government and public accountability was supposed to conduct a hearing on Friday, November 29.
Manila Rep. Joel Chua said his committee was prompted to postpone the congressional, following the calls of most House members.
“Nagdesisyon (kami) na i-postpone yung committee hearing tomorrow to pave way sa imbestigasyon ng NBI nang sa ganun ay hindi naman kami nagagamit na excuse para masagot (ni Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio) ;’yung complaint,” said Chua, who chairs the committee, in a media conference.
Echoing Chua, La Union Rep. Paolo Ortega V stressed that the House and NBI proceedings were “equally important.”
“Napakaimportante rin po na masagot po ‘yung mga tanong at kaukulang imbestigasyon ng NBI kasi ‘di naman po biro ‘to. These are grave threats. Sabi nga ni chair (Chua), national security is at stake and nakakabahala po saka nakakatakot,” added Ortega, a deputy majority leader.
Last Tuesday, the NBI issued a subpoena on Duterte-Carpio after her “assassination” remarks against Pres. Bongbong Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

The embattled vice president explained that her statements were “maliciously taken out of logical context.”
She is being investigated by the House panel for her alleged irregular spending of confidential funds worth over P610 million of the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education, which she previously headed.

During a media conference last Wednesday, Duterte-Carpio said she requested the NBI to reschedule her summon, as she will attend the House inquiry to support her OVP staff.
NBI director Jaime Santiago, meanwhile, expressed hope that Duterte-Carpio will abide by their order, adding that they could reschedule her summon if she requested.
“Sinasabi niya (Duterte-Carpio) na sasagot at pupunta siya, ‘yun ang pinanghahawakan namin,” said Santiago. “Wala pa kaming natatanggap na request from her na ipagpaliban ang imbestigasyon tomorrow.”
