(July 14, 2024) – A women’s group on Sunday slammed the proposed construction of a stadium near the Clark International Airport in Pampanga worth P32 billion, calling it a “gross misplacement of priorities.”
The Gabriela Women’s Party said the proposal is detached from the economic crisis and widespread poverty the Philippines continues to struggle with.
“How many public hospitals, schools, or housing projects could be built with P32 billion?” said Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas. “It’s like the government is living in their wildest dreams while ignoring the reality on the ground.”
Last Friday, the Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC) announced its plan to build a 40-hectare entertainment center for hosting major international events by 2028, particularly mentioning a possible concert of global pop icon Taylor Swift.
CIAC president Arrey Perez said that the entertainment complex is also aimed to attract more passengers to the Clark International Airport and boost tourism.
“Sa panahon kung kailan milyun-milyong Pilipino ang halos walang mailagay na pagkain sa mesa, talagang naisipan pa ng gobyerno na maglaan ng bilyun-bilyon para sa isang mega-stadium project na hindi naman mapapakinabangan ng mamamayan,” added Brosas, who’s also the assistant minority leader in the House of Representatives.
She furthered that pursuing the project through a public-private partnership arrangement should be thoroughly checked, claiming it favors corporate interests over public welfare.
“Hindi natin maaaring payagan na gamitin ang pondo ng bayan para sa mga proyekto na pangunahing pinakikinabangan ng malalaking negosyo habang ang mga tao ang nagdadala ng mga panganib at gastos dito,” added Brosas.
She also urged the government to redirect its focus and resources to addressing the pressing needs of Filipinos instead of turning the country into an entertainment hub.
Based on a recent survey of Pulse Asia, inflation remained the topmost national concern of Filipinos, followed by increasing the pay of workers, reducing poverty, creating more jobs, and fighting graft and corruption in the government.

“We need sustainable development that uplifts the lives of the majority, not glitzy projects that serve only to line the pockets of a few,” stressed Brosas.
