(May 19, 2025) – Pres. Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. on Monday refused to comment on the merit of the impending impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio.
He, however, stressed that the case is already in the hands of the Senate.
“Pabayaan natin sila (senators), may proseso ‘yan,” said Marcos in the first episode of the “BBM Podcast.”
Marcos furthered that his focus is on his job as chief executive.
“Ako, basta ang nasa isip ko, tapos na ang eleksyon, balik sa trabaho with the new lessons learned,” he added.
Duterte-Carpio’s impeachment is expected to begin in July, according to Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero.
Senators will serve as judges, while the 11 appointed prosecutors of the House of Representatives will argue the case.
The embattled vice president needs at least nine votes to avoid conviction, according to Article XI of the 1987 Constitution.
Last February, 215 lawmakers in the House of Representatives impeached Duterte-Carpio for her grave threats against Marcos, first lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez, among seven articles of impeachment.
Marcos, meanwhile, opened up about reconciling with the Dutertes, emphasizing the need for unity and political stability.
“I’m always open to any approach na ‘Halika, magtulungan tayo.’ ‘Di ba? Kahit na hindi tayo magkasundo sa polisiya. Hindi tayo magkasundo. Gawin mo ‘yung trabaho pero huwag na tayong nanggugulo,” he added.
The Marcoses and Dutertes have previously hurled tirades against each other during the campaign period for the 2025 midterm elections.
Their rift worsened after Duterte-Carpio’s father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, was arrested by the International Criminal Court for his alleged crimes against humanity due to his brutal war on drugs last March.
Marcos and Duterte-Carpio previously won the 2022 national elections via a landslide fashion under the now-defunct UniTeam.
The commander-in-chief also assured Filipinos that his administration is listening to their grievances and looking for long-term solutions.
“Talagang mamadaliin na namin ‘yung immediate solutions na puwedeng gawin kaagad. At ‘yun ang mararamdaman ng taong-bayan mula ngayon,” said Marcos.
A survey by Pulse Asia released last month revealed that the performance and trust ratings of Marcos both fell to 25% from 42% in February due to his feud with the Dutertes, among several factors.
