(July 6, 2021) – Heart disease remained the leading cause of death in the country in 2020, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said.
In a report, ischemic heart disease killed 105,114 people, maintaining its rank as the most fatal illness in the Philippines last year. Cancer followed with 66,179, while cerebrovascular diseases accounted for 64,100, according to the PSA.
“Incidentally, these were also the leading causes of death in 2019,” the PSA said in a report released on Monday, adding the three illnesses have been the top three causes of death for the past five years.
“In 2020, deaths due to ischemic heart diseases were the leading cause of death with 105.11 thousand cases or 17.1 percent of the total deaths in the country. This was an increase of about 7.8 percent from the 97,480 deaths in 2019.”
Total fatalities exceeded 600,000.
Deaths from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) had also landed in the top 10, registering a total of 30,140 deaths last year. It was higher than the record of the Department of Health (DOH) pegged at only 25,296 as of Tuesday.
But the PSA attributed the discrepancies to the different mode of monitoring it had adopted from the health agency.
“Data from PSA are based on the descriptions written on the medical certificate portion of all death certificates received which were certified by the Local Health Officers, while data from the DOH were collected through a surveillance system,” the state statistics bureau said.
“Furthermore, COVID-19 deaths in this release will refer to both confirmed and probable cases as of registration, whereas figures released by DOH were deaths from confirmed cases only.”
Metro Manila, the pandemic epicenter, registered the highest COVID-19 deaths at 13,000 while the Southern Tagalog and Central Luzon regions tallied 7,000 and 2,690 deaths, respectively. In the capital, Quezon City had the highest COVID-19 related deaths at 2,640, the report added.
State statisticians also noted that deaths arising from intentional self-harm increased by more than half, bringing the total deaths to 4,420 last year from 2,810 in 2019. It was ranked as the 25th leading cause of death in 2020.
