(February 27, 2025) – A lawmaker on Thursday acknowledged Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero’s move to set a timetable for the impending impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio but expressed hope that it would still be set earlier.
Escudero announced that it will start on July 30 or a week after the State of the Nation Address of Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. It will be held Mondays to Thursdays.
Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Jil Bongalon called it a “positive development” but urged Escudero to change his mind amid the Senate’s recess.
“Considering that there’s already a directive asking for the organization of the administrative support to the Senate sitting as an impeachment court, hopefully magbago (‘yung petsa). Kasi given the provision of the (1987) Constitution that the trial shall forthwith proceed, so probably there will be a change of heart,” said Bongalon.
Bongalon is part of the 11-member prosecution panel in the impeachment trial, along with Batangas Rep. Gerville Luistro, General Santos Rep. Loreto Acharon, Antipolo Rep. Romeo Acop, Manila Rep. Joel Chua, Iloilo Rep. Lorenz Defensor, Bukidnon Rep. Jonathan Flores, Eastern Samar Rep. Marcelino Libanan, Oriental Mindoro Rep. Arnan Panaligan, San Juan Rep. Ysabel Zamora, and 1-Rider Party-list Rep. Ramon Gutierrez.
Bongalon added that they will be “fully prepared,” including their witnesses, if the impeachment trial begins sooner than expected.
“I believe that there will be a possibility—a big possibility—that trial will commence at the soonest possible (time),” said Bongalon.
Escudero has stated that the Senate will adhere to the proposed schedule, warning that the upper chamber “would not tolerate any dilatory motion or pleading.”
On February 5, 215 lawmakers in the House of Representatives voted to impeach Duterte-Carpio, citing constitutional violations, including plotting to assassinate Marcos and allegedly misusing over P612 million worth of confidential funds.
The Supreme Court, meanwhile, has yet to rule on several petitions seeking to compel the Senate to begin the impeachment trial immediately.
