(February 22, 2025) – Pres. Bongbong Marcos JR. on Saturday reiterated the Philippines’ commitment to democracy as he joined in the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Manila.
Marcos honored the sacrifices of Filipino soldiers who fought against Japan in the Battle of Manila in 1945. They were aided by the United States (US).
“We are proud of our history and even prouder of the relationships and alliances that we have built over the many years,” said Marcos in his speech at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial.
He recalled the destruction of Manila during the war, calling it “the most devastated city in the Pacific,” and recognized the deaths of over 100,000 Filipino civilians and more than 1,000 US troops.
He also stressed the country’s commitment to upholding international law with the help of allies.
“Bound by our shared history and our common commitment to a region governed by rules not by might, where the rights of countries, large or small, are respected, the Philippines recognizes challenges that lie ahead and is assured that we can continue to count on the help of friends, as we have done so over the last 80 years,” added Marcos.
Marcos, the son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr., has been called out for historical revisionism in the past, particularly regarding human rights violations and their ill-gotten wealth during their two-decade kleptocratic rule.
He has also refused to apologize for his family’s atrocities during Martial Law.
In 2023, he removed the anniversary of EDSA People Power from the list of national holidays.
The historic revolt will commemorate its 39th anniversary on Tuesday.
Marcos also insisted on the Philippines’ dedication to peace.
“The Philippines, deeply familiar with the atrocities brought about by war between and among nations, has always chosen the path of peace, and I can assure all of you that we will continue to do so,” said Marcos.
