(March 21, 2022) – Vice presidential candidate Rizalito David on Sunday issued a fierce appeal for other aspirants to join him in rallying behind a common candidate in the 2022 elections in a bid to reject the tandem of former senator Bongbong Marcos Jr. and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
David, running under the Democratic Party of the Philippines, said he is willing to withdraw his candidacy for this plan to work. He acknowledged that he and his running mate Dr. Jose Montemayor Jr. cannot win but he stressed that the same goes for the other candidates as well.
“Kaya ako ngayon ay nananawagan sa aking mga kasamang kandidato, let us form a grand coalition to defeat Marcos and Duterte,” urged David during the debate organized by the Commission on Elections (Comelec). “Please, please, please do a selfless act.”
Marcos, the standard-bearer of Partido Federal ng Pilipinas, continues to enjoy a wide lead in surveys, tallying 60% in the Pulse Asia poll conducted from February 18 to 23. Duterte-Carpio, who hails from Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, has also maintained her significant lead with 53%.
David believes that a victory for Marcos and Duterte-Carpio would spell disaster for the country, noting that they will continue the wrongdoings of their strong-arm fathers. David added that the “love of country” of the opposition bets should convince them to agree to his pitch.
“If you really love this country, we will unite. Dahil ‘yung mga ayaw sumama sa pagkakaisa na ito, ‘yun ay may mga partikular na interes na gusto nilang proteksyunan. Kami, wala. Ang amin ay ang para sa bayan at kung ano ‘yung makabubuti sa sambayanan,” said David.
When asked who will be the best choices, David said he is willing to support Vice President Leni Robredo and Senate President Tito Sotto III for the country’s top two positions. They are trailing Marcos and Duterte-Carpio in the latest Pulse Asia survey with 15% and 24%, respectively.
Before declaring her candidacy, Robredo earlier engaged in unification talks with Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, Sen. Manny Pacquiao, and Sen. Ping Lacson for a solid opposition but the negotiations never prospered due to significant political differences. Robredo said she cannot compromise her conviction on non-negotiable issues.
It remains unclear if the candidates are still willing to welcome unity talks with just a few weeks left in the campaign period. Sotto admitted that he was “speechless” with David’s suggestion but he did not comment further, as he said the move to unite behind him lies on the decision of his opponents.
David, who’s also a host of Radio Veritas, also aired his frustration over the absence of Marcos and Duterte-Carpio in the Comelec debate.
“Let us defeat Marcos and let us defeat Duterte together because we cannot do it by our lonesome,” said David.
