(December 23, 2024) – The Games and Amusement Board (GAB) on Monday confirmed that the professional license of NorthPort Batang Pier player John Amores was revoked after his involvement in a shooting incident in Laguna.
Last September, Amores shot Lee Cacalda while riding a motorcycle driven by his brother along a highway in Brgy. Maylatang Uno after a heated argument during a pickup game. Lee survived the attack.
The 25-year-old shooting guard and his brother surrendered to the authorities. He is facing an attempted murder charge. They were out through a bail.

In the full copy of the six-page resolution obtained by News5, the GAB found Amores guilty of “conduct unbecoming of a professional basketball player.”
“Respondent’s (Amores) act of firing a gun on a national road placed in real peril the life or safety of innocent passerby and motorists who happened to be at the scene of the incident,” said GAB in the resolution. “The respondent created a public disturbance.”
Amores is no longer allowed to play in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and other GAB-sanctioned professional leagues.
The regulatory body furthered that Amores’ “self-serving allegations” failed to justify that he only acted in self-defense.
“Jurisprudence instructs that the admission of self-defense or defense of a relative shifts the burden of proof to the accused to prove that his act is justified. These justifying circumstances must be clearly established through convincing evidence. They cannot be appreciated if uncorroborated by competent evidence or is patently doubtful,” added GAB.
Last October, the PBA suspended Amores for the entire Commissioner’s Cup without pay for violating the Uniform Players Contract. Fans criticized the unfair verdict.

Amores was previously involved in punching incidents while playing for Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers.
Despite his violent transgressions, NorthPort drafted him as the 51st pick last year.
