(July 27, 2023) – The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) is validating the five deaths and two injuries reported due to the onslaught of Typhoon Egay, which has dealt heavy damage to several provinces in Luzon.
Based on its latest monitoring report, the NDRRMC said the heavy rains and strong winds affected almost 330,000 individuals and displaced almost 30,000 residents.
At least 400 homes sustained partial or full damage worth P195,000. Meanwhile, the running total of damage to infrastructure, which includes bridges, roads, and schools, has now reached around P1.7 million.
In Pangasinan, Calasiao Mayor Kevin Roy Macanlalay said many of their evacuees were displaced because of the damage to their homes. As of this morning, he said the heavy rains continue.
“Hindi sila nag-evacuate sa mga evacuation center pero tumuloy sila sa tahanan ng mga kamag-anak kasi ang evacuees natin ay (umalis sa bahay nila) ‘di dulot ng baha kundi dahil sa pagkawasak ng kanilang mga bahay,” said Macanlalay on Radyo 5’s Bangon Bayan with Mon.
As of 5 a.m., the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) placed Cagayan under Signal No. 2. Some portions of the province were previously under Signal No. 4. Typhoon Egay, with international name Doksuri, is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility today.
Cagayan Gov. Manuel Mamba said the past few days have been hectic for them because of the destruction that Typhoon Egay brought, especially to their northern municipalities.
“Some of our bridges and some of our roads are still not passable,” said Mamba on One News’ The Big Story on Wednesday evening. “We’re trying to monitor the exit of Egay and take note of the damages to properties, infrastructure, crops, and fisheries.
Similarly, Bontoc in Mountain Province reported damaged roads that made it difficult to enter the area, noting the rockfalls and landslides. At least one person died in the province.
In a report by the Associated Press, a landslide in Buguias, Benguet killed a mother, her child, and two other individuals.
Marcell Tabije, who heads the Ilocos Norte Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said electricity is still being restored in their province. Laoag, the capital city of Ilocos Norte, was submerged in flooding after the heavy rains in the past few days.
“‘Yung sa agriculture, minimal pa lang ‘yung nare-report kasi ngayon pa lang nahupa ‘yung panahon. ‘Di pa talaga nakakapag-assess ‘yung agriculture office natin para makita ‘yung buong pinsala na dinulot ng bagyong Egay,” said Tabile on Ted Failon and DJ Chacha sa Radyo 5.
Amid the typhoon’s impact, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) assured help to the affected families by monitoring the evacuation centers and prepositioning food packs.
“‘Yung cash assistance ay nire-ready na rin natin pati ‘yung emergency cash transfer na maaari nating ibigay sa local government units,” said DSWD spokesperson Romel Lopez.
