(September 27, 2024) – Former senator Leila de Lima on Friday urged former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque to face the allegations against him, turning the table on the latter after his “very cruel” remark about her while she was in jail.
De Lima said Roque was trying to invoke the law while disrespecting it for hiding from the arrest order of the quad committee of the House of Representatives.
“Yung sistema kailangan respetuhin mo (Roque) muna before you cry foul and seek any legal relief. Magpakita muna siya and then prove his innocence,” said De Lima.
Roque is being investigated by the quad committee due to his alleged link to a Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO).
Last Monday, his daughter, Bianca Hacintha Roque, appealed to the Supreme Court to issue a temporary protection order to stop the arrest order against his father.
In 2018, Roque wished De Lima a lifetime in jail while being detained at Camp Crame over drug charges. He also claimed that the imprisonment of De Lima was not politically motivated. De Lima was eventually acquitted in all three cases.
“That was definitely very vicious, very cruel, very unkind remarks from him. Very unprofessional. Makikita diyan ‘yung tunay na ugali ng mga ganyan na tao,” said De Lima.
While De Lima agreed with Roque’s claim that legislative hearings are usually politically tainted, he must still address the allegations hurled at him.
“Meron talagang bahid ng pulitika ‘yung mga high-profile congressional probe. Ang pinaka-importante is meron bang lehitimong issue sila (quad committee) na tinitingnan? Meron, ‘yung POGO,” added De Lima.
Roque was cited in contempt and ordered detained by the quad committee for repeatedly ignoring the subpoena demanding him to submit his Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth from 2016 until 2022.
He described the hearings as a “kangaroo court,” slamming the panel for already assuming that he was guilty.

The quad committee is investigating the possible links of POGOs, former president Rodrigo Duterte’s brutal war on drugs, and the drug trade.
