(July 2, 2024) – President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has announced on Tuesday that he is set to appoint Sen. Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara as the new Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd), replacing Vice Pres. Sara Duterte, whose term as Education Chief effectively ends on July 19.
VP Duterte resigned from the Cabinet of Pres. Marcos, Jr. on June 19.
The President made the announcement during the 17th Cabinet Meeting in Malacañang, stating that Sen. Angara has accepted the position.
Pres. Marcos emphasized the critical role of the DepEd and the necessity for a leader capable of overseeing its extensive operations.
“DepEd is arguably the most important department given the crucial role of education,” said Pres. Marcos.
He also acknowledged the challenging nature of the selection process, stating, “We have many excellent candidates.”
According to the Presidential Communications Office, Sen. Angara has an extensive legislative history and has championed significant educational reforms since joining the Senate in 2013, including the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act and the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 (K-12).
He holds a Master of Laws from Harvard University, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of the Philippines, and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the London School of Economics, positioning him well to lead DepEd. He also received endorsements from key educational organizations, including the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations (COCOPEA) and the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities (PACU).
In a statement, Sen. Angara expressed his gratitude to Pres. Marcos for the trust placed in him by appointing him as Education Secretary. He said that this significant responsibility is one he accepts with humility and a profound sense of duty.
He expressed his commitment to working with all sectors of society, including his predecessor, Vice Pres. Duterte, to ensure that every Filipino child has access to quality education and to build upon her accomplishments.
“I am eager to collaborate with President Marcos and the entire administration in serving our students, supporting our teachers, and enhancing the overall quality of education in our country,” Angara said.
Meanwhile, the government expressed its appreciation to Vice Pres. Duterte for her service and anticipates a smooth transition with Angara’s leadership.
