(June 13, 2024) – Vice President Sara Duterte on Wednesday addressed the status of the political alliance UniTeam with Pres. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr., which was formed during the 2022 presidential elections, stating, “We are not candidates anymore.”
Vice Pres. Duterte explained that the UniTeam was specifically created for their 2022 election campaign and expressed gratitude to all their supporters.
“The UniTeam was the tandem during the 2022 elections, and then the tandem of Bongbong-Sara during the 2022 election. The elections are over, and we are thankful to our fellow countrymen for their support during the 2022 tandem,” the vice president said.
Malacañang not released a statement on the matter. Previously, Pres. Marcos had asserted that his trust in Vice Pres. Duterte remains intact, despite ongoing speculations about a rift between the Duterte and Marcos camps.
This speculation stems from continuous criticisms by the Duterte camp against Pres. Marcos, which seem to have intensified along with recent suspensions of former president Rodrigo Duterte’s allies.
There are also rumors that Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte, Vice Pres. Sara’s brother, might be suspended for allegedly attending prayer rallies against the President. However, the Vice President said she has not heard any news about it.
Yesterday, Mayor Baste was absent from the Independence Day celebrations at Davao City Hall, but Vice Pres. Sara was present at the event. She attended the flag-raising ceremony, however, did not sing the “Bagong Pilipinas” hymn, which was recently mandated by Pres. Marcos and recommended to all local government units.
In her speech before city hall employees, Vice Pres. Duterte emphasized the importance of commemorating the sacrifices of our ancestors to achieve Philippine sovereignty.
“On Independence Day, we do not only celebrate our liberation but also place emphasis on the importance of remembering the adversities we have overcome and the ideals we fight for,” she said.
