(July 26, 2022) – The Quezon City Police on Tuesday filed murder charges against a doctor who killed a former mayor and two others inside the campus of Ateneo de Manila University where a university graduation ceremony was about to happen.
The head of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD), Brigadier General Remus Medina, said three counts of murder, frustrated murder, carnapping, malicious mischief, and violations of firearms law were filed against Chao Tiao Yumol II.
Based on the police report, Yumol opened fire at Rosita Furigay, her daughter and executive assistant near the entrance of ADMU’s Arete building on the day of the graduation ceremony of the Ateneo Law School on Sunday afternoon. The suspect escaped the scene by forcibly taking a witness’ car.
The incident killed former Lamitan City, Basilan Mayor Rosita Furigay, her bodyguard Victor Capistrano, and ADMU’s security guard Jeneven Bandiala who tried to stop Yumol.

Furigay’s daughter Hannah Rose, who was supposed to attend the graduation rites, was wounded. One bystander, a parent to another one of the graduating students, was also hit by a stray bullet. Both are now recovering in hospital.
The police said the QCPD Tactical Motorcycle Riding Unit has caught the suspect following a drag net operation. The police have confiscated from him two pistols, one magazine with live ammos, and one empty magazine.
Police recovered from Yumol two guns, a 9-mm Ruger Security-9 pistol which was registered under the suspect’s name, and a caliber .45 Rock Island M1911 A2, which belonged to a member of the Philippine Army that the police said went missing in November 2019 in Sulu.
Lawyer Quirino Esguerra Jr., Furigay’s legal counsel, said the gunman has been in hiding since last year because of arrest warrants for indirect contempt and over 76 cyber libel cases filed by the ex-Mayor’s camp. He suspected that Yumol may have also held a grudge against the Furigays for ordering the closure of the clinic he was operating without permit.
In other media reports, Yumol accused Furigay of corruption and links to the drug trade, which the former mayor’s camp has denied.
The incident sparked calls from various political figures and concerned citizens to put an end to the “culture of impunity” that has been blamed for encouraging such violent incidents.
