(July 25, 2022) – Filipinos stressed the need to fight more against the culture of impunity in the country following the gun attack that left three people dead ahead of a law graduation ceremony at the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) in Quezon City on Sunday.
In a statement, the administration of the top private university condemned the violent act of Chao Tiao Yumol, a doctor by profession, that left students, parents, professors, and other guests traumatized. Yumol targeted former Lamitan Mayor Rose Furigay who died due to the premeditated attack.
“There is no acceptable reason for violence,” read the statement of ADMU. “It has robbed the members of the Law School Class of 2022 of what was supposed to be a joyous celebration. (We) are assisting students, staff, and guests who are dealing with trauma from the incident.”
Furigay’s long-time aide Victor George Capistrano and university security guard Jeneven Bandiala were also killed. Hannah Furigay, the graduating daughter of the former mayor, is now in stable condition after sustaining injuries.
Former Vice President Leni Robredo joined the calls seeking justice for the victims. She said Furigay was a supporter of the Angat Buhay program they launched in Lamitan during her time at the Office of the Vice President.
“It reminds us to keep on pushing back on everything that promotes a culture of impunity,” said Robredo.
Many people took to social media to also denounce the impunity happening in the country as manifested in the incident. Others also called attention to the hateful posts shared by Yumol on Facebook.
Carlos Conde, the deputy Asia director of Human Rights Watch, also shared a screenshot of Yumol’s Facebook profile. Rappler CEO Maria Ressa, meanwhile, stressed that impunity happening online could translate to actual violence.

Online violence is real world violence. Impunity online leads to impunity offline.

A culture of violence with impunity against critics. A culture of online vitriol and harassment. The result? A climate of violence translated offline, where people are emboldened to kill fellow Filipinos whom they could simply label “drug lords”.

Netizens also lamented how violence has become the “state of the nation.” With this, they called on the public to stand firm in seeking accountability.
Today’s Ateneo shootings are our true State of the Nation. Impunity reigns.

There was a politically motivated killing by someone who’s repeatedly expressed hatred online. In a polarized society with a culture of impunity, online hate can lead to severe consequences. Violence should have no place in educational spaces and elsewhere. May justice be served.

The Ateneo shooting incident is a manifestation of the culture of hate and impunity sown over the years. Question is- will this be a singular incident or a harbinger of worse kinds? Prayers for peace, healing, and justice.

Do you know why it’s dangerous for BBM propagandists to justify the actions of the Ateneo shooter?
Because it reinforces the already existing notion within their echo chamber that harming someone is morally and socially accepted as long as you’re part of their community

Sen. Risa Hontiveros backed the demand for justice and called for psychosocial support for those affected by the harrowing incident. She also hoped for healing for the ADMU community due to Bandiala’s death.
“There is no place for this shameless culture of impunity that has been poisoning our country these past years,” said Hontiveros. “A school campus, which should be a zone of peace and a place of warmth, should never have to deal with these kinds of cruel attacks.”
President Bongbong Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio also released separate statements on the cruel attack. Duterte-Carpio urged the Philippine National Police to resolve the issue of gun violence.
The Ateneo Law Student Council has offered assistance to those dealing with trauma from the incident.
“The Ateneo Law Student Council vehemently condemns this reckless and illegal act that has led to the death of people. No form of violence should be tolerated especially if it causes the loss of innocent lives,” said the group.
