(August 6, 2021) – Manila Mayor Isko Moreno on Friday dropped hints that the string of attacks hurled against him could be tied to his political prospects in the 2022 elections but he did not rule out the possibility the recent incidents could be mere coincidence.
Moreno revealed that before the overcrowding in Manila’s COVID-19 vaccination sites, their website for vaccine registration was targeted by hackers 133 times to no avail. Hours later, the show cause order of the Department of the Interior and Local Government surfaced but the agency has since retracted it.
It all happened weeks after the popular Moreno ranked second among the possible choices for president and vice president in a Pulse Asia survey.
“Napapansin ko, ‘pag may lumalabas na survey, nagkaka-insidente sa Maynila. Siguro nagkakataon lang. In the first place, I did not volunteer to include my name sa survey. It is the least of my priorities nowadays. Kakaharapin ko rin naman ‘yan,” said Moreno on Ted Failon and DJ Chacha sa Radyo 5.
Moreno refused to point fingers regarding the chaotic scene in at least four COVID-19 vaccination sites in Manila where an estimated 20,000 people flocked as walk-in registrants.
But he also seemed to take a swipe at President Rodrigo Duterte after referring to an unnamed individual who blames people for their alleged shortcomings.
“‘Yung pagtuturo ‘di ko ugali. Meron akong kakilala, sa gabi niya kinukuwento ‘yung mga pagkukulang ng ibang tao,” said Moreno. “We keep on adapting (after) our failures and shortcomings. There is no perfect system we can implement now because there’s no playbook in this pandemic.”
While he refused to identify those who could be behind the recent attacks, Moreno suspected everything could be part of “concerted efforts” against him for disagreeing with some government policies.
Moreno’s possible bid for president in the 2022 elections rose anew after he jumped ship to Aksyon Demokratiko, a political party formed by the late former senator Raul Roco. He admitted he left the National Unity Party after it expressed support for Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
In a past speech, Moreno said he would not support politicians who treat public office like inheritance by passing it on from one family member to another.
“When you are in a party, dapat nakikiisa ka. So when you disagree by principle, maganda na rin na magkaroon sila ng malayang pagpili and I respect that,” said Moreno.
He also encouraged government officials to be more circumspect in their messaging to the public to avoid panic and confusion. But Malacañang washed its hands on the issue, blaming disinformation peddlers instead.
To recall, Duterte repeatedly said he would order the arrest of those who refuse to get vaccinated, adding in a separate address he doesn’t care if they die.
“Sana maiwasan ‘yung pananakot, ‘yung mga salitang hindi naman makatutulong sa damdamin ng tao,” said Moreno. “Kasalanan naman nating pamahalaan kung bakit ang bakuna ay parang umaambon-ambon lang.”
